Position Overview

The Traveling Foreman is responsible for direct supervision of assigned electrical crews across multiple project locations. This role oversees the execution of electrical work in the field while traveling to active jobsites as assigned. The Traveling Foreman ensures installations are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with Hays Electrical quality standards and applicable codes.

This position serves as a key field leader supporting Superintendents on remote or rotating projects. The Traveling Foreman bridges communication between crews and leadership, maintains daily labor tracking, enforces production plans, and ensures consistent execution and culture across all assigned projects.


Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Oversight

  • Lead and supervise daily work of Journeymen, Apprentices, and Helpers across assigned project locations.

  • Assign tasks based on labor plans, schedules, and site-specific conditions.

  • Provide daily coaching, training, and mentorship to apprentices and journeymen.

  • Enforce accountability for safety, quality, and productivity at all sites.

  • Establish consistent expectations and standards across traveling crews.

Operational Execution

  • Interpret drawings, specifications, and labor plans to direct field installations.

  • Ensure work is executed per project requirements, NEC, and Hays Electrical standards.

  • Track crew hours daily and report production to the Superintendent using Hays labor codes.

  • Identify obstacles impacting schedule or productivity and escalate issues with proper documentation.

  • Participate in lookahead planning and provide input on manpower needs and crew mobilization.

Quality, Safety & Compliance

  • Conduct daily jobsite safety huddles and ensure toolbox talks and JHAs are completed.

  • Monitor installations for quality and compliance with QA/QC requirements.

  • Ensure crews follow NEC, OSHA, and Hays Electrical safety policies.

  • Correct or escalate deficiencies immediately to minimize rework and risk.

Financial & Performance Management

  • Monitor crew labor performance against budgeted hours.

  • Accurately complete daily timecards and ensure alignment with actual production.

  • Support Superintendents with labor data for WIP tracking and forecasting.

Communication & Culture

  • Communicate daily progress, manpower needs, and risks to the Superintendent.

  • Act as the first point of contact for crew concerns while traveling.

  • Promote and model Hays Electrical’s core values: Excellence, Safety, Drive, Communication, Client Focus.

  • Encourage participation in training, Trailblazer initiatives, and cultural programs.


Required Skills & Competencies

  • Proven ability to lead electrical crews across multiple or remote jobsites.

  • Strong technical knowledge of electrical installations, sequencing, and methods.

  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and schedules.

  • Proficiency with daily reporting tools and production tracking.

  • Strong communication skills and ability to lead in changing environments.

  • Ability to consistently enforce safety, quality, and productivity standards.

  • Flexibility and willingness to travel as assigned.


Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in electrical construction.

  • Minimum 1 year of supervisory experience (Foreman, Leadman, or equivalent).

  • Journeyman Electrician license required.

  • Demonstrated success meeting productivity, quality, and safety standards on multifamily or commercial projects.

  • Willingness to travel and support multiple project locations.

  • Commitment to training and developing apprentices and journeymen.

  • Reports To: Superintendent

  • Direct Reports: Journeymen, Apprentices, Mechanics

  • Decision-Making Authority: Daily task assignments, safety enforcement, labor tracking, and immediate field adjustments for assigned crews.

  • Crew labor hours maintained within ±5% of budget

  • 100% accurate daily production reporting

Schedule Performance

  • 92%+ completion of planned daily and weekly tasks

  • On-time execution of assigned project scopes

Quality & Compliance

  • 92%+ QA/QC compliance rate

  • Minimal repeat deficiencies or punch-list items

Safety

  • 100% completion of daily safety huddles and toolbox talks

  • Zero tolerance for unsafe acts; immediate corrective action enforced

Financial & Reporting

  • Accurate and timely submission of timecards and reports (target: 100%)

  • Labor efficiency maintained within budget projections

Team Development & Culture

  • Documented apprentice progression

  • Active participation in training and cultural initiatives

  • Demonstrated crew engagement and retention improvement
