Director of Engineering & Design (PE)

Position Overview 

5K Power is seeking an experienced Director of Engineering & Design (PE) to lead the engineering, design, and technical development of 5K Power’s growing portfolio of temporary power, electrical distribution, power generation, and prefabricated electrical products. 
 
This position will serve as the company’s senior engineering authority and will be responsible for taking products and systems from concept through engineering, design, fabrication, testing, field deployment, and continuous improvement. 
 
The ideal candidate is a Professional Engineer (PE) with strong electrical engineering experience and a practical understanding of electrical construction, manufacturing, prefabrication, temporary power, power distribution, equipment integration, and applicable electrical codes and standards. 
 
This is a hands-on leadership position. The Director will work closely with operations, manufacturing, estimating, design, field operations, procurement, sales, and executive leadership to ensure 5K Power products are engineered correctly, efficiently manufactured, commercially viable, and ready for deployment. 

Key Responsibilities 

Engineering Leadership 

  • Serve as the senior technical authority for 5K Power. 

  • Lead and manage engineering and design standards across all products and projects. 

  • Establish engineering processes, design criteria, standards, and review procedures. 

  • Provide engineering direction for new product development and existing product improvements. 

  • Review and approve engineering designs, calculations, drawings, specifications, and technical documentation. 

  • Establish design standards that allow products to be replicated consistently at scale. 

  • Provide technical support to manufacturing, field operations, estimating, sales, and customers. 

  • Act as the primary engineering resource for complex technical issues. 

Product Development 

Lead the engineering development of 5K Power products, including but not limited to: 

  • Temporary Power Skids (TPS) 

  • Temporary power distribution equipment 

  • Transformer skids 

  • Switchgear and switchboard systems 

  • Spider boxes and distribution panels 

  • Mobile power distribution equipment 

  • EV/mobile charging equipment 

  • Generator integration systems 

  • Data center temporary power solutions 

  • Electrical prefabrication assemblies 

  • Custom power distribution equipment 

  • Future 5K Power product lines 

  • Sign and Seal Designs as Needed 

Take products from: Concept → Engineering → Design → Prototype → Testing → Manufacturing → Field Deployment → Standardization 

Electrical Engineering 

  • Perform and/or oversee electrical calculations and system design. 

  • Develop electrical one-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, layouts, panel schedules, and equipment specifications. 

  • Perform load calculations, short-circuit calculations, voltage-drop calculations, transformer sizing, feeder sizing, and overcurrent protection coordination as applicable. 

  • Develop equipment ratings and electrical distribution configurations. 

  • Evaluate system grounding, bonding, disconnecting means, overcurrent protection, and safety requirements. 

  • Review equipment selections and provide technical procurement specifications. 

  • Develop standardized electrical configurations for 5K Power products. 

Professional Engineering / Code Compliance 

  • Maintain professional responsibility for engineering work within the scope of the PE license. 

  • Review and seal engineering documents when required and appropriate. 

  • Ensure designs comply with applicable requirements, including NEC / NFPA 70, NFPA 70E, OSHA requirements, applicable NFPA standards, UL requirements and applicable product standards, IEEE standards where applicable, local AHJ requirements, customer specifications, and manufacturer requirements. 

  • Maintain awareness of changes to applicable codes and standards. 

  • Coordinate with AHJs, third-party testing agencies, manufacturers, engineers, and customers as required. 

Manufacturing & Prefabrication Integration 

Work directly with the 5K Power manufacturing and fabrication teams to ensure designs are optimized for production. 

  • Design products specifically for manufacturability. 

  • Develop repeatable fabrication methods. 

  • Reduce fabrication labor and material waste. 

  • Standardize components and assemblies. 

  • Develop bills of materials and engineering material standards. 

  • Create fabrication drawings and assembly documentation. 

  • Establish quality-control checkpoints. 

  • Review field and manufacturing feedback and incorporate improvements into future designs. 

  • Develop design-for-manufacturing standards. 

The Director should constantly ask: “Can we build this faster, safer, cheaper, and more consistently?” 

VDC / BIM / Design Technology 

  • Lead coordination between engineering and VDC/BIM teams. 

  • Establish modeling and drawing standards. 

  • Ensure engineering designs translate accurately into fabrication models and shop drawings. 

  • Develop standardized digital product models. 

  • Support development of a 5K Power digital product library. 

  • Utilize BIM/VDC technology to improve constructability, coordination, estimating, fabrication, and field installation. 

  • Establish standardized engineering deliverables for each product. 

Engineering Standards & Product Library 

Develop and maintain a comprehensive 5K Power Engineering Standards Manual containing: 

  • Standard product configurations 

  • Standard details 

  • Electrical one-lines 

  • Typical wiring diagrams 

  • Equipment specifications 

  • Standard component selections 

  • Standard enclosure requirements 

  • Transformer configurations 

  • Disconnect configurations 

  • Distribution configurations 

  • Grounding requirements 

  • Labeling requirements 

  • Testing requirements 

  • Quality-control requirements 

  • Approved manufacturer lists 

  • Standard BOMs 

  • Standard fabrication details 

The ultimate objective is to create a repeatable 5K Power product platform, rather than engineering every project from scratch. 

Quality & Reliability 

  • Establish engineering quality-control procedures. 

  • Participate in product testing and commissioning. 

  • Investigate design-related failures and field issues. 

  • Conduct root-cause analysis. 

  • Develop corrective and preventive actions. 

  • Track engineering-related rework and warranty issues. 

  • Implement design improvements based on field performance. 

  • Establish product acceptance and testing criteria.

Required Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related engineering discipline. 

  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license. 

  • 10+ years of progressively responsible engineering experience preferred. 

  • Strong electrical power distribution experience. 

  • Experience with electrical construction, manufacturing, prefabrication, or equipment integration strongly preferred. 

  • Strong knowledge of the National Electrical Code. 

  • Experience with electrical distribution systems ranging from low voltage through medium voltage preferred. 

  • Experience with transformers, switchgear, switchboards, distribution equipment, generators, and temporary power systems preferred. 

  • Experience leading engineering teams. 

  • Strong understanding of engineering documentation and design processes. 

  • Ability to read and develop electrical drawings and one-line diagrams. 

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills. 

  • Strong communication and leadership skills. 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Experience with data center electrical infrastructure. 

  • Experience with temporary power systems. 

  • Experience with electrical prefabrication. 

  • Experience with UL-listed equipment or product development. 

  • Experience with NRTL testing/certification. 

  • Experience developing manufactured electrical products. 

  • Experience with AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks, or similar platforms. 

  • Experience with BIM/VDC. 

  • Experience developing standardized product platforms. 

  • Experience with Lean manufacturing or Design for Manufacturing (DFM). 

  • Experience working with AHJs and third-party testing agencies.

The successful candidate will be comfortable walking into the shop, reviewing a product with a fabricator, identifying a design improvement, working with the VDC team to update the model, reviewing the electrical calculations, coordinating with a manufacturer, and ultimately delivering a better product.
