Controls Integration Engineer
Location: Austin, Tx
Reports To: Solutions Architect, 5K Automation and Controls
Employment Type: Full-Time
5K Automation and Controls is a newly established building automation and energy management company affiliated with Hays Electrical Services — a nationally recognized electrical contractor with over 19 years of experience delivering safe, high-quality electrical solutions across commercial, industrial, and specialty markets. Built on the same foundation of safety, excellence, drive, communication, and client focus that defines Hays, 5K was created to meet the growing demand for intelligent, scalable BAS/EMS solutions across enterprise and multi-site portfolios nationwide. Our mission is simple: to make ourselves indispensable to our clients by delivering technically sound, commercially smart building automation solutions that perform.
Position Summary
The Controls Integration Engineer is responsible for the technical design, programming, and integration of BAS/EMS systems across 5K’s project portfolio. This role translates project scopes, sequences of operations, and client requirements into fully engineered control solutions — from DDC programming and graphics development through system integration and commissioning support. The Controls Integration Engineer works closely with the Solutions Architect, project managers, and field installation teams to ensure that every system 5K delivers is technically sound, properly documented, and fully functional at handover.
Key Responsibilities
• Design, program, and configure DDC control systems for BAS/EMS projects, including controller programming, graphics development, network configuration, and system integration
• Develop sequences of operations, control narratives, and point lists in accordance with project specifications, design documents, and 5K’s engineering standards
• Integrate BAS/EMS systems with third-party equipment and building subsystems including HVAC equipment, lighting, meters, and IP-based devices via BACnet, Modbus, and other open protocols
• Conduct factory acceptance testing (FAT) and provide on-site startup and commissioning support for 5K-managed projects
• Develop and maintain project engineering documentation including as-built drawings, submittal packages, O&M manuals, and commissioning records
• Coordinate with the Solutions Architect to ensure project designs are implemented accurately and that any field-level design changes are properly documented
• Provide technical support to project managers, field technicians, and commissioning agents throughout project execution
• Support the development of 5K’s standardized engineering templates, sequence libraries, and platform configuration standards
• Troubleshoot integration issues and resolve technical problems during and after project installation
• Participate in technical training, manufacturer partner programs, and continuing education relevant to BAS/EMS integration
Qualifications & SkillsRequired
• 3-7 years of hands-on experience programming and integrating building automation systems in commercial environments
• Proficiency in at least one major open-protocol BAS platform: Niagara/Tridium, BACnet IP/MSTP, Distech Controls, or equivalent
• Experience developing DDC programs, graphics, and trend logs for HVAC controls applications
• Working knowledge of system integration protocols including BACnet, Modbus, and LON
• Ability to read and interpret mechanical, electrical, and controls drawings and sequences of operations
• Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve integration and communication issues independently
• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, building systems, or a related technical field, or equivalent experience
Preferred
• Hands-on experience with Tridium-Niagara, Distech, or Delta Controls platforms
• Experience with multi-site or national rollout deployment programs
• Familiarity with energy metering, demand response, or EMS analytics platforms
• Niagara N4 & AX certifications or equivalent manufacturer certification
