Travel: Approximately 15% - 30% as required to support project operations, client meetings, audits, investigations, and organizational oversight activities.
Position Overview
The Safety Director provides corporate leadership and strategic oversight of safety operations across Hays Electrical Services' commercial, industrial, healthcare, institutional, municipal, service, and large-scale electrical construction portfolios.
This position is responsible for implementing and maintaining the Corporate Safety Management System while ensuring consistent execution of safety standards across all operating regions and projects. The Director serves as an authority for occupational safety, regulatory compliance, risk management, workforce protection, incident prevention, and safety culture development.
The Director leads the company's safety organization, including Safety Managers, Safety Coordinators, and project-level safety personnel, while partnering closely with Operations to ensure safety expectations are fully integrated into project execution.
This position partners closely with the Director of EHS to maintain alignment between commercial safety operations and data center EHS programs, ensuring consistency in company standards, reporting, lessons learned, and enterprise-wide safety performance.
Key Responsibilities
· Implement, maintain, and continuously improve the Corporate Safety Management System (SMS).
· Maintain company-wide safety policies, procedures, standards, and risk management practices supporting commercial, industrial, healthcare, institutional, municipal, service, and large-scale electrical construction operations.
· Lead and manage the company's safety organization, including Safety Managers, Safety Coordinators, and project-level safety personnel.
· Recruit, mentor, train, and develop safety personnel to ensure technical competency, leadership development, and consistent application of company standards.
· Develop staffing plans, succession planning strategies, and organizational structures to support current and future business operations.
· Provide corporate governance and oversight of project-level safety programs across all commercial and large-scale electrical construction projects.
· Conduct strategic safety assessments, audits, field assurance reviews, and performance evaluations to verify program effectiveness and compliance with company standards.
· Implement company-wide standards for hazard identification, risk assessment, job hazard analysis, pre-task planning, incident prevention, and regulatory compliance.
· Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, state, local, and other applicable regulatory requirements.
· Provide oversight and guidance regarding incident investigations, root-cause analyses, corrective actions, lessons learned, and severe incident management.
· Collaborate with Operations leadership to ensure safety requirements are integrated into planning, scheduling, procurement, construction execution, and project delivery activities.
· Collaborate with the Director of Quality Control to ensure safety considerations are incorporated into quality processes, inspections, operational assurance initiatives, and continuous improvement efforts.
· Support Business Development and Preconstruction teams by defining safety-related deliverables, staffing requirements, client commitments, and operational capabilities during project pursuits.
· Represent Hays Electrical Services during client audits, regulatory inspections, executive reviews, industry events, and safety-related meetings.
· Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on reducing incidents, improving workforce engagement, strengthening regulatory compliance, improving hazard recognition, and enhancing overall safety culture.
· Maintain a visible leadership presence through periodic project visits, leadership engagements, client meetings, and field assurance activities throughout the company's operating regions.
Education & Qualifications
Required
· Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in construction safety, occupational health and safety, risk management, or electrical construction operations.
· Minimum of 5 years of leadership experience managing safety personnel, safety programs, or corporate safety initiatives.
· Strong working knowledge of OSHA Construction Standards (29 CFR 1926), OSHA General Industry Standards (29 CFR 1910), and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
· Demonstrated experience managing corporate safety management systems.
· Experience supporting commercial, industrial, healthcare, institutional, or large-scale electrical construction projects.
· Strong understanding of hazard identification, risk assessment, incident investigation, corrective action management, and safety program administration.
· Ability to interpret construction specifications, contracts, safety requirements, and regulatory standards.
· Strong leadership, communication, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
· Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, and safety management software platforms.
Preferred
· Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, or related field.
· Certified Safety Professional (CSP).
· Associate Safety Professional (ASP).
· Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST).
· Occupational Health and Safety Technologist (OHST).
· OSHA 500 Construction Outreach Trainer.
· Experience supporting self-perform electrical contractors operating across multiple regions.
